So, I just installed my Hybrid shifter in my FL5. I immediately felt the crisp, distinct shifts into 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. BUT then came the 5th gear. I traveled past the 5th gear "notch" (for lack of a better description), and I hit a brick wall. Nothing. Went back to neutral and tried to go straight into 5th, brick wall. So moderately confused, I went back to neutral, and SLOWLY crept right, and then I felt the "notch" and moved the shifter forward. Click, there it was! Pulled straight down, there was 6th. Pushed all the way right and down, reverse.

So why did I take the time to write all that out? Well, does anyone think that there should be more pressure needed to move the shifter to the right past 5th/6th? I personally feel that the stock shifter had this correct. I literally just installed the shifter, and it was an immediate observation. Perhaps this corrects itself when the vehicle is in motion? Reverse lockout comes to mind, but I assume that is only going to prevent going from 5th into reverse. But my concern is going too far right and missing the shift from 4th into 5th.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this normal with the FL5? Is there something wrong with my Hybrid shifter?

Let me know your thoughts. I know I am dumb, be gentle.

Thanks

I dont have this, nor have i replaced my shifter on my FL5 yet.
Have you made sure that all of your cables and trim are in the right spot? I've had a similar experience on a previous car ive owned and found that i didnt have everything routed perfectly and ended up having to trim some of the console too. Just a suggestion of something to check before you lose your mind and hopefully someone else can give you a real answer.

Everything fitted perfectly. Hybrid did an amazing job engineering the shifter to allow perfect fitment of the cables. Everything goes back into the same location as OEM, with the OEM mechanism; Honda designed the cables to be connected to the shifter itself. Nothing is making contact with the trim either.

Took the car out to do some necessary datalogging for the tuner, and I think my fears have been put to rest. The car shifted great. No immediate issues going into 5th from 4th. I did not attempt to deliberately force the shifter beyond where I knew 5th to be. However, it felt very similar to stock, hence it felt natural to me once I took it out and drove the car.

The way I had my Acuity setup at first it was a little too notchy at low speeds in my 1-2 shift, and I had to go back in and make some adjustments based on their suggestions.

Actually aside from height and the 1 or 2 setting not sure how much adjustability you have. Might be interesting to hear what your settings/height is so others with the Hybrid shifter can chime in on their settings.

The Acuity has gate spacing adjustability and different spring options, and it was really helpful to have to dial in the exact feel you wanted.

Both of my settings are set to the #1 setting. I personally feel that is a "good enough" improvement over stock, and I definitely did not want to risk the possibility of a money shift under stress at the track. I am running the Hybrid titanium competition rod, which also adds to the feel of the shifter.

After taking it out for the first time, the feeling over stock is tremendous.

It was just that initial observation while the vehicle was off and stationary after installation, described in the initial post, that really threw me off.

I've had the Hybrid Racing shifter installed for about a year now. After installation, I noticed the same when initially trying to shift into 5th gear. My thoughts at the time were that muscle memory was accustomed to the slop in the stock shifter. After a short drive, it was quick to acclimate to the tighter gate and mechanical feel when shifting. Such an improvement and better driving feel/experience.

You likely already did this but it is a good idea when installing to transfer or apply additional grease to the connection where the plastic clip on the shift cables connect to the metal ball on the shifter assembly.

Yes Sir. Noticed the same. Yes Sir. I added a small amount of Permatex O-Ring Lubricant. Plastic safe! Lol.

I picked up the Hybrid because when I bought it, I did not necessary read anything negative about it. In addition, I love the solid one peice (long form) competition shift rods, and the look of there assembly.

I want to be clear. After taking the car out for the first time. I do not have anything negative per se to say about the Hybrid. I was just looking for validation that what I was feeling on initial install was normal and apparently it was.

No issues to report as of yet. All seems well, and I love the look/feel.

May try an Aquity next season.

Seems like you were running into this issue only while the car was off?

I'm no expert or anything but my experience with dry shifting always has a bit of resistance and clunkiness as nothing is moving and there's no lubrication being run through the gearbox.

If that wasn't the case then you can ignore my input.

I had the HR shifter in my 07 FA5 Si (180K miles) and I loved it.

I installed the HR shifter in the FL5 a week after I purchased it, and I also installed the HR shifter cable bushings.

I did not experience any issues with the HR shifter after installing it in the FL5, though I have not built up any muscle memory on the OEM shifter and I cannot compare the HR to the OEM shifter since I did not drive much using the OEM shifter.

Also, since I was still in the break-in period, I drove it very gently (slow and deliberate shifts, no hard accelerations, etc) for the first 600 miles and ramped up to 1,000 miles.

I now have 6,500 miles on the HR shifter in the FL5, no issues what so ever.
