Has the 2nd gear grind happened to your FL5 yet?

I'm new to here and recently purchased a championchip white fl5. I'm coming from a 19 si full bolt on, ppg gears, ctr clutch / flywheel swap, and a delay valve deleted clutch master cylinder. I'm currently at 330 miles on my new fl5. I've experienced the first to second gear grind four times since I bought it at 6 miles. I don't know if it's me being used to my other setup or the transmission itself or the clutch pedal setup perhaps. It happened the first time at about 28 miles on it. Kind of spread out since then mileage wise.

I found it interesting that I'm not the only one though who noticed this behavior and I never had that issue with my other car.

FK8s had this issue with some people I knew too

it seems like the common theme is when people “rush” to toss it into second

I have about 1300 miles no second gear grind though

I think you need to be more deliberate and pull the gear straight down instead of directing the knob and make sure you clutch all the way down

My wife owns a stock 19 si coupe and I own an fk8. Yes, it's specific to the type R trans. I'm used to it, so I take my time shifting 1-2. On the Si I can upshift a lot faster and never had an issue. Half of my car 2nd gear grinds happened in the very few occasions she was driving it.

I don't like it. It seriously just makes me wonder if something is off a little pedal adjustment wise or something. Other people are saying it never happens to them which is odd..

I'm sure that some of the people that're saying it never happens to them, can shift as fast as us. I find it very odd..

Bookmarked thank you. I'll keep an ear open and see if my skill adjust to it and it's me or, I'll try the pedal adjustment eventually.

I have adjusted the pedal but I still had a grind. Next steps is fluid change.
Getting into 2nd is never smooth and feels clunky also the engine rev matches kind weird going 1st to 2nd.

I’m trying the pedal adjustment, the fluid, and then a rear engine mount. If that doesn’t fix it, I’m selling it. I’m not driving a sports car—never mind a Type R—that every time I shift into second I’m scared of grinding a gear. It’s just not an enjoyable driving experience.

As far as I can tell, this hasn’t been successful for a lot of people. Drop off your car, they call you 48 hours later saying they can’t reproduce the issue, etc.

I get you but may be worth a shot before you do all the other stuff

Yeah at best they would do the clutch pedal adjustment, so go for it and see.

Quick questions for folks that get grinds often - is it usually when the trans is cold? Or will it do it after you've been driving a while and doesn't matter about gear oil temp?

I've never gotten a grind but 1-2 and 2-3 can be a little notchier than I like when the car is cold. (Manual trans - what else is new!?) The Type R takes a little longer to loosen up than most cars I'm used to.

I only have 500 miles on my FL5. I do feel 2nd and reverse are not as smooth as others. I did have grind at least once. So I always pull harder when switching to these two gears.

I don't grind anymore after adjusting my shifting speed and smoothness. Clutch in all the way to the floor, let the RPM's drop, and clutch out, add gas. Being smooth is the key.

Keep in mind the trans needs some break-in time. Things are tight from the factory, which is to be expected. Give it time and mileage (heat and cooling cycles). It doesn’t sound like a regular enough occurrence to be of concern especially as your car is so new. It should settle-in within 2k-3k miles depending on driving habits.
