my issues isn’t who’s paying for it. It’s just a general question of does anyone know what makes the FL5 glass cost so much more than the regular civic glass. The prices are not safelites. It’s the OEM price from Honda. I realize that Safelite likely gets a discount and just sells to me/insurance at msrp.

I wonder if it's somehow more rigid, or perhaps a thicker layer of film? Or like I told @Djseto yesterday....it's probably wind-o-phobic for better aerodynamic properties.

Yes, the Honda Civic Type R has a more rigid windshield than the Civic because of its use of structural adhesive and flush-mounted acoustic windshield glass. The Type R is designed for performance driving and has a number of features that contribute to its rigidity.

My best guess is because the car is made in Japan the windshield uses a different supply chain hence difference part number. Getting the bloody part over here from the other side of the world adds the $$$$ since it's not a high production car. I'd bet it's the same physical specs as the sport hatch made elsewhere.

Both the normal Civic and the Type R use Fuyao glass. The Type R is just laminated according to the markings in the lower corner. The normal Civic’s use solar acoustic glass. The cost increase is likely because of the reduced volume. The acoustic glass was probably too heavy (gotta make sure the FL5 was faster than the FK8 after all)

Either way, the rock chips in mine tell me it’s super soft glass.

My local auto glass shop quoted $1450 all in, if I didn't have glass coverage (I do, so zero out-of-pocket). They used OEM glass. Installation included camera recalibration.

Considering OEM msrp is $1900 they must get a hell of a discount.

Big, national insurance company who probably negotiated part prices with Honda.
Since dealers sell parts online at 2/3 MSRP, I'm thinking wholesale price is 1/2 MSRP (or less) on common replacement parts.

Soft as butter. I have two small pits already. Super annoying.

Best price I found for online dealer on that part is about $1200. I’m sure shipping ain’t cheap either on a windshield.

I was quoted $550 for aftermarket glass not including calibration at my local shop because they don't have the means to do it. My comp coverage is $250 including glass replacement so when the time comes, I'll likely stick with oem.

This glass is incredibly soft though, 4500 miles and I have 4 pits, 1 small chip/crack, and 1 bullseye crack. I've been able to repair them all enough to keep me going without needing replacement for now.

Not an FL5. My 2021 FK8 with 30,000 miles is very pitted.
At night, with oncoming lights, it looks like a star field.
At night in the rain it's awful.
I'll get through this winter and then check my options.
This looks like a Civic problem to me. My wife just got rid of a 2018 Accord. Its windshield is still great (my granddaughter has it).
