While on the lift fixing the bumper I did the prep work to get it ready to go to VIR for the Type R Track Day in May. Mounted up some RE-71RZ tires and flushed the brake fluid.

Then it was just time to wash and pack the car and it was off to VIR.

Was busy at work so missed out on the Friday part of the track weekend. But we headed down after work and had a fairly easy ride. About halfway there my wife mentioned she thought the car smelled funny. I ignored her and blamed the car in front of us. 2 hours later when we pulled into the tavern to meet the boys I got out and smelled what she was talking about. The battery was cooking itself and putting off all sorts of heat and fumes. Luckily another Type R owner had some tools so we got it out of the car quickly and nothing bad happened.

Weather was going to keep me off track on Saturday so need to rush finding a replacement. We went out at lunchtime and picked one up. Got it installed and then hung out for the rest of the day. Rode with a couple of member's to offer some pointers and Matt let me take his BMW out for a session. Had a great time hanging at a Mexican restaurant for dinner.

Sunday came and the weather was better. Still overcast and some light drizzle but a drying track in the morning was looking promising. Got the car teched and went out for the first session. The Bridgestones are insane. Was only planning to get comfy and not push too hard but damn were they hooked up! Beat my PB from last year by 1.3 seconds. Was feeling good but it felt like the car was holding back some power so I decided to try the next session with individual mode and pedal dance instead of +R with long press. Bad idea. Not only did it feel like it was still holding it back but the turn in was terrible. So for the final session of the weekend I used +R long press again. The tires were still hot from the last session so I waited until the final instructor session around 4:40 and thankfully they had cooled off for the most part.

That session is what track day dreams are made of. Shared the track with 3 other cars. I got in the back and let them go so I could have open track in front of me. Was able to do 1 push lap and one cool down lap three separate times. First lap was another 2:09.3 Then a 2:09.6. I knew I was running out of time to get down to a 2:08 so I put it all into the final lap. Ran what felt like a really good lap all the way up until the final time through hog pen where I overcooked it and had to lift on corner exit and lost .15 seconds from the other 2 laps. Finished with a somewhat disappointing 2:09.102. So close to a 2:08. Oh well, had another great weekend at VIR with some great dudes. Excited to see where the group decides to go next year.
