Past build thread on the FK8: The first TYPAAHH

Ok so it's been little over 5 months of picking up a new 2025 FL5 and I sold both my FK8 and 991.1 GT3 to purchase it plus extra cash to be a good family man.

FL5 google doc mod list

Favorite wheel setup on the fk8: 18x11 315/30/18 18.95 265/35/18 You can check out the build thread link if you want to see past iterations of it.

Never did a build thread on this since well I'm not paying Renlist for a forum membership. But yeah was good while it lasted as I kinda fell out of love with it while my now 3 year old daughter was the #1 priority. Plus I got laid off from my job and money was getting tight. Maybe it was the latter.

Ok so onto the actual car in question:

The original plan was to just throw on Swifts and spacers and drive it into the sunset. Yeah....I'm stupid in thinking that'll actually be it. But yeah this is it with 20mm and 25mm spacers and lowered on Swift springs.

Within the first 2 months I placed orders for all the jdm parts I wanted so I'd have a steady stream of stupid arriving throughout the year.

Mods started off really lame with just doing interior stuff like matte carbon fiber overlays from Create Carbon. Good stuff but I honestly was never an overlay lover on interior pieces. I think it was the fact my GT3 had factory carbon crap in it and I was just grasping onto the past. Either way the end result made me cave into other stupid mods really quick.

Feb 2026

Wheels arrived a few months earlier than expected. Huge thanks to LMTLS Auto for getting these limited spec Diamond Silver Volk Ze40s in 18x10 +40. I wrapped them in my favorite daily tire Falken Azenis RT660...now in "+" flavor! Also got a great deal from Kamispeed on this Bride Zieg IV Wide Carbon Bucket. It's a bit too wide for me but I couldn't pass up on the price plus the store points earned haha. It did fit the theme of keeping it comfortable but stupid.

Went to Japan in March for 3 weeks and came back with all the small fun stuff. Spoon Rigid Collar front and rear, oil cap, the cute blue sock, and valve cover. While I was away RS-R iBest active coilovers came in and the Carbing overflow tank and titanium strut bar. Oh and I install the Infinite Design intake and turbo inlet in matte carbon finish that I had sitting since January. Also had EPR make a matte carbon version of the cooling plate kit to match and added the Create Carbon fuse box overlay. Chasing J's titanium hardware was added as well in some areas.

Thanks everyone for the positive vibes! Feels good to start fresh and continue the journey with another type r.

Quick update on new parts:

J.A.S. Motorsports parts arrived. Only ordered 3 things but it was the pieces I felt I'd enjoy the most for the time being.

Favorite vent insert. 98% on fitment. The passenger side edge has a 1mm gap compared to the rest of the piece sitting perfectly flush. I do have ppf so I'm wondering if that's causing the issue. I also read and was told the hardware might rust and the metal grill should be resprayed as that'll rust too. I'm going to leave it as is for now since I do have a hood on order and would rather sell piece how it came from JAS.

Matte dry carbon door sills! Actually bought these cause I saw they were real cf instead of the mugen ones or the illuminated plastic oem ones. I'm more than satisfied with the quality and uniqueness it adds to the interior.

The double sided tape it came with sucked so I reapplied some 3m vhb that I always keep with me. Never know when you need to afix something back onto the car in a pinch.

Ahhh the shift knob is very well made and basically is like an upgraded oem feel. I really do love the oem fl5 knob but man did it scratch easily for me. My work bag buckle grazed it and left a mark.

But yeah I don't think I'll use this JAS one just yet. Mainly wanted it as a collector's item cause...well it's J.A.S.

Surprisingly on reddit no one knew the significance of the brand and what they do so I got the usual crass comments of how stupid it looks with the logo being repeated everywhere. Gotta realize I'm taking photos of the "mods" so of course you'll get an overload of the branding. But actually seeing it on the car... you'll see it upon getting in and out of the car and that's about it.

Welcome!

Maaannn, that was a Helluvan opening post!
All JDM parts, as well? Wonder what that cost, a down payment on one of Gabe Newell's yachts?

In particular, I like the looks of the Lonely Driver shift knob, the J.A.S. bonnet vent, and the Angel Art of Attack X Toyo Steel magnetic EDC tool box.

Very inspiring.

What an awesome build thus far. Went from 0-100 real quick. Absolutely love how it's coming out and I guess I will live vicariously though you. I told myself I would keep it stock for one year then do wheels and coils.

More Japan parts arrived....

After seeing the HKS video on how much it absorbs vibrations I was sold. Honestly I could have done some power mods but this build so far is about the slowing chill things in life right now.

11th Gen Honda Civic Kazuo_WFC 2025 Civic Type R build PXL_20260421_181040255

Installed the front. Cold start had noticeable nvh reduction. I usually have this rattle from center of the dash....but it was gone. I was going to put some felt pads to get rid of it but hey ok that only cost me $900. Fawk. Haha.

Oh and the manual is for RHD so that's why the Mugen decal is upside down....I know...it's trashed now. Charge back time.

11th Gen Honda Civic Kazuo_WFC 2025 Civic Type R build 1776899871000_R0000630

Ok so I tried to install the front cusco brace but it wouldn't clear with the hardware from the mugen damper kit. I ordered some lower profile bolts so hopefully that gives me the clearance I need to torque it down. Seems overkill when I look at it stacked together.....should have taken a photo but I was more disappointed in the moment. Anyhow we'll see if adding more rigidity changes how the damper works. Kinda works out as it'll give me a day to drive the car.

11th Gen Honda Civic Kazuo_WFC 2025 Civic Type R build PXL_20260421_175706387

I'll do the rear damper tomorrow along with adding a throttle body spring to the exhaust valve.....apexi n1 problems. Exhaust is still worth it even with the rattle but at least someone figured out a different solution besides trying to seat it tighter. Thank you fellow forum member wherever you are.

I've got the same Cusco Power Braces on the way, also considering the Mugen (or Spoon) damper rods, do take pics if you can manage to get them to work together. It'll be helpful for sure.

A couple things:

1. your pictures are kind of fantastic. Are these just iphone shots you're talent magicking up or do you have some secret sauce like a $5k camera or something

2. some tire questions:
- what size Falkens are you running?
- do they rub at all, even over harsh bumps?
- why do you explicitly like these Falkens? I ran them in 275/30-19" format and they sucked for daily driving (loud, tramlined, sucked in rain), got outpaced by Bridgestones and Yoks routinely in autocross especially in cold and/or wet conditions, and dissolved one prematurely after only ~20 or so runs due to delamination. Yes they were 660+ and I now hate them and spent $6k on Volks/Bridgestones exclusively to avoid Falkens (yet still have 3 available for sale local pickup only no lowballs I know what I have)

3. Seat questions:
- what was involved with the install (and do you have any idea if the procedure maps directly to the DE5)?
- do you know if both seats are required to match for most DE events? I think the answer is yes and I'd probably do that anyway but just wondering for edification

4. Do you plan to address the camber or is this just strictly a street build?

Great build overall just trying to match to my own build expectations.

Thanks! All the good looking photos are taken with a Sony a7 IV w/ primarily a 55mm 1.8 Zeiss lens. Other camera I use is a Ricoh GR IV HDF. My profession is actually a photographer in the automotive field.

2. some tire questions:
- what size Falkens are you running? 275/35/18
- do they rub at all, even over harsh bumps? No rubbing but I'm on coilovers and have camber adjustment front and rear. I'm sitting at -2.2 front and -2.5 rear for now.

I personally like them as I set my fastest times in the FK8 at Streets of Willow (1:26.2 CW) on them on the old 660s. I've gone through 3 sets so far and didn't encounter any issues. I'm wondering if autocrossing format lends itself to not getting enough heat into the tires and or some other issue with your tire pressure and camber settings. I like to get to 30-31 psi hot and with at least -3 front and -2 rear. Zero toe front and rear.

Also I do agree they're not that great in the wet but I don't expect them to be since they're at 200tw tire made for summer usage. Noise levels on these don't bother me.

3. Seat questions:
- what was involved with the install (and do you have any idea if the procedure maps directly to the DE5)?

I'm guessing you can use FL5 seat brackets for DE5 as well. I always just change the drivers side as my wife doesn't like buckets or reclining "race" seats haha. Also it's saves me money and I only need to get a resistor for the driver side to cancel out the SRS light.

- do you know if both seats are required to match for most DE events? I think the answer is yes and I'd probably do that anyway but just wondering for edification

DE events? Sorry I'm not familiar with those. I know for any track event I've been to here in California you can run whatever. But I've always done open track days and nothing like a real competition and classes.

4. Do you plan to address the camber or is this just strictly a street build?

Ideally I'd like to run more camber up front but it's strictly a street build for now. I don't have plans to track this car yet. But the itch is starting haha. I have another set of wheels already but it'll be another square setup.

Great build overall just trying to match to my own build expectations.

Feel free to DM me or just comment here. I'm always down to help with spreading information.

Good stuff, thanks for the responses. The photography profession tracks, because I don't really have an eye for that kind of stuff and I still noticed your shots.

I think I just conflated either a post from another thread where I thought you were running Swift springs, or maybe I just missed the part where you added coilovers. I'm assuming strut-mount camber adjustment? Not super important. Also yes I'd recommend to run more camber it makes a huge difference- but with the caveat I'm attuned about 90/10 for autocross vs track. Higher front camber is ESSENTIAL for autocross- I think for strictly track it's less critical.

Case in point, I think you're spot on for autocross with the tires- and here in the mid-Atlantic we might not know what the weather's like til we're out on the tarmac. Literally, two days from now I'll be out there, and it's expected to drop 20 degrees (into the low 50s) and calling for rain; will it come in the morning or afternoon? 🤷‍♂️ No one knows. Thus NO ONE runs Falkens out here but they're really kind of the only show in town for 19s (there's cup2s and Nankangs but I chose what I thought was the best option, especially since the evolution to 660+)- I was just curious and being a bit facetious that I hate them. They're just not ideal for AX. And the lack of heat and also probably tire pressure didn't do them any favors and probably killed the one. You Cali guys legit have it so good with the weather.

For a track tire they're probably great, but honestly so are the Nankangs. And by DE I meant shorthand for HPDE, or High Performance Driver's Education, the type of track events I'd go to if I did a track event. Sorry for just jumping to the assumption that the West Coast Boyz have the same terminology, with the myriad of tracks you have out there. I should just move to California.

In any case, the rubbing is what I was more interested in and I'm starting to form a hypothesis that the FL5 has just a bit more room in the fender than the DE5. Or the RE-71RZ is just that much wider than other 200s. Either is likely, just need more data.

Interested in what direction you go next.

Did my 2nd oil change at 3k miles w/ Pennzoil Ultra Plat Synthetic 0w20. I'm trying to loosely follow The Motor Oil Geek's advice on how he'd do oil changes for a new vehicle from this video:

While I was under there I installed the Cusco mid brace. You can just remove the 4x 10mm toward the back of the plastic cover and 4x of the clips and 2x clips on the upper part of the plastic cover (in the wheel well). Typical 14mm and 17mm sockets to remove bolts and reuse them with some washers they provide.

The took off the rear bumper to do the rear Mugen damper and also install the Cusco rear brace. Oh since I have the Rigid Collar kit install I made sure they were sandwich between the bar and the brace since 2 of the mounting points for the brace connect using the oem subframe bolts.

Rear bumper removal seems even easier than the FK8. The rear diffuser comes off with it. 2x 10mm, 2x of those plastic hex pieces with the 2 notches you push and spin...haha sorry no clue on the real term for them and 2x of trim clips under the diffuser as they clip into the chassis.

Last fix was to install my driver seat belt properly with the bucket seat. The best part is you only have to use a flat head and turn it counter-clockwise...I think it was cc. It's a latch that locks the belt to the bottom part. I was like....damn Honda really did intend people to do mods with this car...jk I'm sure it's some cost saving, part swappable shit for them.

Oh make sure to get a seat belt extender. I used to pick them up from Amazon (used them on the GT3 and my M3) but noticed they were not listed anymore....bought one from here instead and it's perfectly fine: seat belt extender pros

Also installed lasfit led bulbs for the blinkers and reverse lights.
