Didn't know Vega didn't recommend it. I'd like to know opinions as well.
Years ago when I started playing around with settings on my first "homemade" tune, I used early spool. It gave a much snappier feel off the line and that was the attraction.

But like everything else, with the good comes a little bad. The bad being that it sort of fizzled out more up top. And of course you're adding a bit more potential wear and tear.

UPDATE

Vehicle: 2024 Civic Si

Total tuned time: 9 months

Tuned miles driven: 4000

Tuning device(s) used: Ktuner

Tunes used: TSP stage 1

Fuel used: 93

Additional related mods: PRL high volume intake, PRL intercooler

Problems/issues: None

I’ve been switching back and forth between map 2 and 3. Will be upgrading clutch soon but torn about the head studs. I emailed TSP and they said running map 3 on stock studs is perfectly safe if you avoid lugging the engine. But that doesn’t seem to be the case with what people are saying. Maybe I’ll wait another 10 to 20k miles and then change them?

I go back and forth on this. On one hand, if you don't have problems now, it's not unreasonable to leave it alone so you don't potentially create a problem (especially if you plan to do the 1b1 method like i did)

On the other hand, it's a nice peace of mind thing to put the better studs in there

I ran map 3 for about 9-10k miles, head gasket had some wear when I replaced it along with the headstuds. No crazy driving, frequent WOT only past 3k rpms. YMMV

To add to this, IMO 1b1 method should be fine before any possible issues, if you run it on OEM studs for a while when you do replace the studs you'd probably want to get it replaced the proper way.

Honestly, a TSP 1 with an intake and intercooler is a very mild setup. You have little to worry about but if you want 100% piece of mind sure do the head studs.

I don't post here much but have studied 1.5T tuning and reliability for nearly 10 years.

For the most part I recommend head studs as a must do at the FBO / flex fuel level and beyond.

Ive been running early spool since day 1. Didnt hear anything about it when i emailed them. Im going to reflash tonight and see how it runs without early spool. Did he say why they dont reccomend it? Even with early spool, it doesnt feel super punchy down low.
Fuck it, another update:

Vehicle: 2023 Civic Si

Tuned miles driven: 12k miles

Tuning device(s) used: KTuner V2

Tunes used: Phearable 1.5r

Fuel used: 93 octane

Additional related mods: TSP ARP headstuds, RV6 clutch kit, PRL HVI, Remark Exhaust, bunch of suspension stuff not worth mentioning in a tuning thread

Problems/issues: None whatsoever.

Driving style: Daily driving, WOT pulls multiple times a day, every day. Autocross a few times a year, hopefully actually getting on track sometime this year, but who knows

Tuning experience notes: Every now and then, my K.Con will climb seemingly unprovoked while cruising on the highway, and then go back down to 0.49. I am currently playing around with the early spool setting in the KTuner menu, even though I was told by John Vega on FB that they don't recommend it. I honestly can't feel much of a difference, but I like the idea of the car bit more responsive to my pedal inputs. Anybody have any insight/opinions on early spool?

I went ahead and revamped the first post a bit and added stat percentages. In doing so, I realized that even though the 10th and 11th Civics are quite similar mechanically there are vast differences in the two as far as how owners view tuning.

For reference, I started the OG 10th gen thread in 2019 and this one in 2021. So we are comparing 7 years of data to 5 but the differences I'm seeing are mind blowing.

Let's look at a couple comparisons:

My 10th gen thread has nearly 1,700 tuned cars. This one has 86.

Here we have about 700,000 tuned miles driven. The 10th gen tuning thread has about 44,000,000 tuned miles driven.

Here, very few cars run on flex fuel. Very few are custom tuned. Very few have full bolt ons. Very few run bigger turbos. Over at the 10th forum all of that is very commonplace.

(Of course, with so many 10th gens having high output setups, there's been 90+ major failures. That's the not so good part.)

Sure some of the difference is that the 11th gen hasn't been around as long but that's only a part of it. I think in some ways, the 11th gen appeals to a different crowd. It has a more "mature" toned down look. It costs quite a bit more. I think those two factors do play a part in the percentage of people that are interested in tuning.

It's possible some of the low tuning numbers here may simply be that many tuned owners don't know that this thread exists or how useful it is to track 11th gen tuning reliability.

Fact: The 11th is a great car. But I think moving forward, with Honda putting more emphasis on hybrids, the 10th gen might the last Civic with a very high percentage of enthusiast owners.

I did some test driving with early spool off. I like it. Throttle is not as sensitive, but it revs out stronger up top. With early spool, 1st and 2nd gear were kind of useless as it would break traction, and run out of steam quickly, but without early spool, first 2 gears feel longer(if it makes sense), as I can rev it out without spinning tires, and i don't have to get to third gear to actually start moving. Driveabiliry on highway is much improved. When I opened the file, early spool was checked by default. Should've tried this out sooner.

^ Isn't that EXACTLY what I said would happen?

Quoting myself from last week. Maybe somebody will actually read this. Nah, probably not.

Now, I know why I rarely post here.

I value everything you've written up, gtman, especially the Tuned Reliability posts. I've read so many of your posts on CivicX to help me plan out mods. And you're correct, I turned off early spool and the tune feels better. For me, early spool is too touchy for everyday driving.
