This past 4th of July weekend I took my Type R on a trip I had always wanted to do: going down the California coast. The plan was drive up to Monterey and spend a few nights there before driving down to Big Sur for a night and then on the last day, since the 1 is split in 2 due to a closure in Lucia, drive back up to Monterey around the closed portion of the coast highway down to SLO, take the 1 all the way up to where it's closed and come back home to SD.

I'm not gonna get into the "fun part" of the car as we're all well aware how much fun a Type R is on windy mountain roads. Most of the roads were smooth enough for the Sport suspension setting (sometimes I'd bump it down to Comfort suspension but majority of the fun parts were in Sport) while the engine was in +R.

On the flat long interstate, I was probably averaging close to 30 mpg given I only needed to stop once on the 450 mile drive that was planned for day 1. The whole trip was around 1200 miles and I topped up 4 times in total which was less than I was expecting (I started with a full tank of gas which isn't counted in that number). I can't understate the comfort in this car. I've driven up and down the I-5 going from SoCal to NorCal many times and I always get tired near the end. In this car, I didn't feel the driving fatigue or the tiredness like I have in other cars. Butt didn't go numb, back didn't ache, legs didn't need to be stretched. Just had the music going and the AC on and the 400 miles in 100 degree weather went by pretty quickly. The last day was the longest day where I drove 675 miles over the course of 12 hours (stopped for food and scenery and one time cause a bee flew in and stung me and I needed to address it) and didn't feel tired when I made it home. All in all, surprisingly very nice car for long drives.

Most of the turn outs were small dirt lots with lots of dips and holes (the one pictured above was one of the better ones) but as long as you slow down to assess how bad it is, the car can go most places without me worrying about it. Any drop or big hole that looked about 3-4 inches deep I avoided and I never scraped once on the stops. Ironically, the only place the car took any sort of damage was in the motel parking lot in Monterey where the front under bumper trim would scrape on the steep drive ways and short hill the had in the parking lot going down and around a tight corridor and a tiny speck of wheel damage when the wheel rubbed against a wall in an tight enclosed parking space on an incline around a planter(I wish I took a photo of that). I'm not bothered by the damage, just the fact that I drove for 4 days straight and it only took damage in a parking lot lol

The storage space in the car is very nice if you have a lot of luggage (myself and the other passengers only had a backpack each but I could see myself doing more in this car).

My only concern was I noticed the car making a weird noise whenever my foot was completely off the gas and the car was rolling. There's a subtle metallic scratching/scaping noise like something is rubbing on something. The sound goes away as soon as I give it any sort of throttle, even just lightly resting my foot on the pedal. I don't know what it is, but I'm planning on having it looked at this week.

~1300 miles in this car is pretty fun and easy. I'd like to do more trips and adventures in this car like state parks or camping.

The metallic tinging noise when you let off throttle is the waste gate rattle thats common. Not sure there is a fix for it yet but it's prevalent and doesn't seem to cause any issues other than being annoying.

Great write-up and looks like it was a fun trip!

Ah that makes sense. I had a feeling it had something to do with the turbo system off load and was afraid it was something more serious

My car makes the same noise when off throttle. I thought I was a rock stuck in rotor, but was told it’s the electronic waste gate. I heard FK8 made same noise.

California is a great state for a road trip....there are so many nice canyon roads inland from Monterey, and all the way down back to LA. It could take weeks to really discover all the nice driving roads this state has to offer.

Btw FK8s all make that metallic noise off throttle, its the wastegate and is a non-issue...just throw an exhaust on and you won't hear it anymore 😉

Nice! I drove from SF to LA once down SR1 in my S2000 with the top down the whole time - a trip I will never forget for the rest of my life. Maybe I'll get the chance to do it again in the FL5 someday!

Took mini road trips a couple times to visit Grand Valley Highway 1 (GT7) point of interests. It's always nice to cruise down CA-1 as certain places have much cooler climate than inland locations.

Great write up!

I can confirm that the FL5 is comfortable on longer trips. I didn't do nearly the same amount of driving but on my way back from picking the car up I didn't have any soreness after 4.5 hours.

This was after the initial 5 hour leg of the trip that was in a rental Corolla where my butt started to hurt after 3 hours. I actually starting feeling better and more energized when in the FL5.

Glad you had a chance to really enjoy the coast in a car well suited for a long trip.
Bee sting aside, sounds like it went really well. Note to self: keeps windows closed.

Very glad to hear the seats have the same magic quality as in the FK8 - no wear and tear even on a long drive.

I’m preparing this car for a 3 wk road trip from south texas into the smoky mountains and tail of the dragon. Getting my local sound shop to add in dynamat to the doors and hatch space, mounting 18in te37s, and hoping to get my hands on the integra ads module before my trip in late September.

reason for all this is the car can get loud and “buzzy” and I want to limit that as much as possible for the long days of driving.
