Totally agree. Having to remove the ECU seems crazy to me.
you'd have to do that with anything that has a snorkel no?

I wish there was one that had a door at the top that you can open up to service the filter. Having to disassemble the intake just to clean the filter is stupid (PRL here)

I was thinking about an intake too. Id consider myself above average mechanically, since I've been an engineer for over 35 years. The designs of some of these intakes blow me away with how complicated they make them. I even shy away from the prl. Just looks like a PITA with how much you have to remove to get it installed. Maybe I'm just getting less ambitious in my older age.

I've never removed the ECU when installing (or removing) a PRL FL5 intake.

I can literally have the airbox out in 60 seconds, no big deal. :p

Removing the ECU isn't a big deal, couple of bolts and two locking clips. Took me about an our to install the PRL HVI and 15 minutes of that was getting the MAF wiring harness out of the plastic guide.

I would suggest looking at the install manuals of the intakes of interest and make your ease-of-install assessment from there.

Man, any tips??? It was such a PITA for me to get everything lined up that I was fully counting on just taking the ECU off to service.

I'm not worried at all about ECU removal but it seems like other people are - am I missing something here? As long as I am careful about the pins, I see no issues.

I loosen the hose clamp at the MAF housing and then remove the two fasteners in the front and the one on the backside. I don't touch the duct, you can leave it in place. At that point you can just pull it out. If you need more wiggle room on the inlet side you can loosen more hoses, etc.

I got the dream automotive ram air. Very minimal removal of equipment and the turbo is loud af. You basically are just replacing the stock air filter with a slightly bigger one. Pretty simple install execpt for the MAF housing screws.

Wish I bought it sooner

Short rams are great for noise and ease of installation.

The GruppeM is nice, I probably would have gone that route if I had an FL5. I'd look at reports of drivability issues with an extra grain of scrutiny; I think I recall someone mentioning these types of issues but that could easily be an isolated incident, attributed to improper installation, etc.

For my DE5 I considered Eventuri but went all in on Infinity Design and it's been great so far. I absolutely love the way it looks and sounds, and FWIW I noticed a significant increase in midrange push as well. The shop that installed it did mention they had some issues during installation, but they succeeded.

GruppeM user here. I’ve had zero issues with it. No need to touch the ecu during install. You can also reach in and remove or replace the filter while it’s inside the box with it still on the car. I have no regrets with it after 5000 miles of use.

Are you on a stock/factory tune? I also read one person say that their car drove fine but a tuner said their MAF readings were still wonky. Not sure if that was just a selling technique for the tuner to get a sale tho.

From my end, I have had no issues after adding the Gruppe M intake on the stock tune. 3k miles and no CEL or any idle issues.
