I'm not an engineer, but I understand the FL5 has been sold as a 4-passenger vehicle in light of load rating concerns. It wouldn't be difficult to overload the car with 4 large adults, but I doubt 3 kids in car seats will even come close. That said, they're your kids, your passengers. Do what you're comfortable with. There are a lot of risk decisions to be made out there.
Thanks for providing your professional insights! Maybe the better use case is that someone else's kid is in the "new" 3rd seat and they are injured or worse in an accident. From what you said, you could be at more risk of being sued because you put a kid in a car seat in a third seat that Honda never designed to be there (in this variant of Civic)...?

You increase your risk of being sued when you pull the car out of the garage, with each passenger that gets in, with every mile you drive, and the faster you go.

Personally, if you got into an accident with someone else's kid in the car, I'd expect to get sued, whether that kid is passenger #2 or #5... but I'm also biased. People can't possibly be as lawsuit-happy as I assume they are, right? 😆

Depends. Are you worth suing. If the answer is yes, people are going to come take what they think you owe them. Don’t wanna be sued? Be poor. 🤷‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️😂

I am an engineer, and while I'm not giving anyone any recommendation about what they should do, I can say that I personally have zero concern about the safety of any center seat passenger in my modified FL5 as compared to a regular Civic hatchback.

I'll just be sure not to exceed the GVWR, and if I do I'll avoid trying to hit top speed :)

I finally did the conversion on My FL5, Process was really easy. I think was easy because I had done it on my Fk8 long time ago but definitely was pretty simple. I did used the seats from a 2023 Honda civic hatchback Sport. Regarding the buckle I used this part number 04823-T49-A00ZA (It comes with 2 buckles, Have in mind you can only used one because conection is not the same. I used the oem and one of the buckles that came with this part number). Local dealer had it for $65, online definitely cheaper but will take longer to receive.

I'll revive this thread to say I was trying to do the same thing but ordered from a recycler as I had none nearby with civic hatchbacks available. These are the "grade A" leather/cloth seats I received from a vehicle in a front end collision and were clean and ready to use based on the listing.

The donor car was a low trim as they are all cloth and very obviously in a rear end collision based on the damage. Moral of the story, go to the recycler and put eyes on seats if you're gonna go that route. I'm contemplating just going with new seats now that I have to deal with returning these pieces of crap.

Got approved for a full refund and no cost return shipping so they've been dropped off at fedex already. To reference, this is what I ordered:

Don't trust recyclers. So now I'm going either brand new or trying to find a hatchback owner that wants to swap for my seats. I need 3 seat belts as my wife and I have a 3rd kid on the way.

Will do. This should be a simple swap, I'm just trying to not spend $1500 at the dealer lol.
i was quoted around 1100-1200 for everything brand new from hondapartsconnection website. not trying to spend that much either. lol

I have a full set of cloth+leather hatchback seats for FL5 I will give to anyone for free. I don't have the needed lap buckle - I forgot to remove it from my CTR when I traded it in this past summer. I'm in Erie, PA - pick up only.

Full disclosure: the seats smell.

When I finally picked up the seats at the parts recycler they were a bit dirty but were in physically great shape. I didn't notice any smell on them at the time.

Once I had them home, I cleaned the hell out of them with steam cleaner, etc. I was able to notice an air freshener smell on them as they dried. Once installed (this was during winter) it wasn't too bad.

Some days later we must have gotten a warmer/sunny day and when I got into the car 🤮 the sun and heat really woke up the stink from these seats.

It was still mostly an air freshener smell, sickeningly strong, but worse than that the stogie smells they were there to mask came through as well. I couldn't yank those seats out of the car fast enough.

I tried a bunch of different things after that to get them to stop smelling like a CURSED LITTLE TREE but was never happy enough to leave them in my car. When I was going to use the car for a long trip with the kids I would install them just for that. And remove them after. Probably used 4 times.
