OK little update to this thread… was able to get the PRL drop in filter for comparison and here are the pictures… not too much of a difference but it looks like the PRL filter has a slight advantage in surface area :hmm:
I will also be doing a comparison between the Spoon ( Sprint Filter ) as well in the coming weeks.
Now as far as having over a month on the K&N I can say it did help with gas mileage on average ( when I wasn’t driving like an asshole :confused1::wave: ) before the drop in K&N filter I averaged 27.1 mpg with a 60/40 split in driving with 3 fill ups , after the filter I was able to manage 29.4mpg with 3 fill ups. Now let’s see if there is any change with the PRL filter ( doubt it .. but we will see:coffee: )

That's pretty impressive info. I feel like I noticed a difference with the k and n so I'm sure the prl one will be just as good if not better. I'm curious about the spoon one. Be cool to see if some one will do a dyno comparison.

Are they different in terms off overall diameter? Asides from the surface area, like length etc. Just curious.

The difference is that the PRL has about a 1/8” width difference which is actually a slight radius on one side… the actual filter area is the same.. but the thickness on the PRL is about 1/8” thicker .. so I think that’s where they might have the advantage in filter surface area.
I will have the Sprint / Spoon filter next week so I’ll be doing the comparison between all these filters.
So far my impressions with the PRL filter feel the same as the K&N but it seems more muted vice the K&N… not sure why but it’s actually quieter.. with the PRL Filter. :hmm:

Actually, it looks like the K&N is about 1/8” deeper than the PRL. The PRL looks to be exactly 1” deep, but ~1/8” - 1/4” wider. Here’s the thing : If both filters have the same number of pleats, then their filtering surface area will be pretty much identical (trading some surface width for surface depth). Splitting hairs, I’m sure performance is pretty much the same between them.

Something to consider too : K&N has been doing this for ages. They’re the big dog and I’m sure they’ve done all kinds of research and development. You know what you’re getting with K&N. However, sometimes big companies don’t continue to innovate. That’s where the small dog can have a big advantage even if they don’t have the years and years of experience. They also may not be limited to big manufacturing equipment and production lines that were state of the art 20 years ago. Anyway…yeah, I’m probably over-analyzing an air filter choice and causing others to do so as well.😄

Thank you for the update. Yes I agree in the noise volume the k and n filter provides. I'm sure performance figures are negligible across the board for a drop in filter. How ever I am curious to see how the spoon sounds and preforms.

OK going to be doing another update to this thread here in the next day.... Received the Sprint Filter today ( AKA Spoon Filter ). going to get 100% detailed measurements and driving impressions on the PRL filter that I have been running as of late since I did the same for the K&N filter as well.

On a side note the quality of the Sprint filter is crazy!! makes the K&N and PRL filters like like cheap toys!

Where did you find the Sprint filter? I see it for FK8 only, and I’ve been told FK8’s dimensions are slightly different from FL5 filters.
I purchased the Sprint filter for the FL5 from MADNESS Autoworks they are the only authorized Sprint in the United States. Also you are correct the filter sizes are different:thumbsup:
