This exactly. I've always found that a ~25% bump in power is really the most fun I get out of modifying cars. The increased demands of things that need to be exchanged/upgraded/repaired when you go too far really starts making a dent on the nature of the car, and it gets to the point where you should have just bought a different car.

To each their own, and I enjoy watching these cars get pushed to their potential, but my personal goal is subtle reliable power to about 365hp to the wheels and some nice clean wheels and other subtle exterior upgrades. I'm watching the Hondata/tuning threads closely to see what nice solid tunes start coming out where I won't have to really worry about what fuel I'm using and what my temps and knock count are datalogging at.
Come on, you would not do a phearable stage 2 tune w basic bolt ons? That will yield 400hp. easy.

Not the guy you quoted, but I’m in the boat where I wouldn’t do any off the shelf tune. The “one size fits all” aspect leaves a lot to desired, and could potentially even have negative effects on vehicles that were built on the lower side of quality tolerances. In my eyes, the off the shelf tunes are temporary until you can get a pro tune (dyno or e tune). Some cars may run just fine on them, but having come from a different platform, OTS tunes scare me.
Luckily, I’m 30 minutes from Innovative Motorworks and Derek Robinson, so I have the luxury of popping on his dyno and getting tuned rather easily.
I'm not trying to convince you to move off your position about OTS maps. It's your car so you can do whatever makes sense for you. I'm curious to know how did you reach the conclusion OTS maps leave a lot to be desired? In what way? Have you seen datalogs for the OTS maps available for the FL5 that give you pause? Also, what do you mean by the statement in red font?

Not everyone is looking for maximum power. Also a byproduct of more power is more heat. When you are tracking the car that heat builds up fast. For street its fine but lower power would be better for track.

Quicky review:

Month 2 w/ 93 Tune…

• Problems: None at all. (Miami reached 104 degrees for a full week at one point)
• Power: Feels way better than stock obv. No rev hang is my fav part!
• Regrets: Need better wheel setup. Whole lots of wheel spin depending on road conditions.
• Additional mods: PRL Inlet Pipe (& installing intercooler this weekend)

I'll never argue that custom is the best option if you are able to take the time and spend the money but it would be interesting to have him do a test run with our off the shelf Stage 1 tune to compare it to the final custom product. :)

It has been done at least once before. From the time I recall, another 10whp was found during the custom tuning session. You can be a little more aggressive when the tune is specific to the car that you are actively tuning. It would be interesting to see the test repeated on another car of course.

Hondata has a fabulous patented technology: Traction control. We've seen 2 seconds a lap improvement. Reduce your torque request, then tune your traction control settings. Hondata traction control alters the power 100 times per second to keep your wheels in contact with the ground. Once set up, it works so well, you dont know it is working.

Is the FL5 Hondata unit supporting boost by gear yet? I had an etune on my FA5 and it was outstanding. It had lots of nice hidden options, and I'm looking forward to tuning my FL5... once it arrives, still in transit.

Yes, and it also supports variable torque tables by mode (e.g., Comfort, Sport), as well as “multi-tune”, which allows for on the fly adjustment of boost by gear and traction control parameters.

@Hondata

Since the Honda meet got canceled on Oct 28th in Orlando. Are you guys not making the trip down?
I wish I would have seen this post sooner. That sucks as I have been waiting for a while for them to come to Orlando. Guess I am shipping it out.
