Assuming this thread's information is correct: https://www.civicxi.com/forum/threads/speed-in-gear-at-redline.51180/

2nd gear stock caps out at 64.5mph. If you truly only hit 72 in 2nd then you're almost certainly fine from a mechanical standpoint. The engine has a degree of leeway before it has issues.

The real question to me is if it has an over rev code- Honda could use that to deny warranty stuff in the future. Definitely check for that- but mechanically I think you're fine as this was a very minor overrev.

Money shift is almost always an issue of improper hand position, but also a testament to their smooth gearboxes. Typically a cracked retainer in Hondas of yesteryear.

edit: just curious, you never heard the noise before?

This sort of reminds me of a friend who was shopping for a used 911 GT3. The one he as looking at was getting Porsche's certification and part of it was investigating any and all engine codes. This car had several overrev events in the ECU. Most were tiny but one was significant with hundreds of revolutions turned by the crank above the limit. According to the dealer, the longer an overrev has been in the system and there has been no issue, the lower the probability becomes that it damaged the engine. So the longer you drive and nothing goes wrong, the easier you can breathe.

If it were my motor, I think I would start by pulling the plugs and scoping the tops of the pistons, bottom of the valves and cylinder walls. I would look for evidence of contact between valves and pistons. Then I may pull the valve cover and inspect the valve train and clearance. You could also do a used oil analysis to look for elevated types of metal in the oil.

I'm sure it's probably fine. I money shifted my white R on track, and was datalogging at the time. It spiked all the way to 9600 RPM's. Never had any issues with the engine, and the new owner of the car has been trouble free too.

It is an instant claim denial.

But if the information provided by the OP is correct and after listening to all the clips.
He should be fine.

Good luck
Really, really appreciate everyone’s input. As it turns out, we were all correct in some way.

The knocking came from cylinder four’s rod bearing. Cylinder 4 took the lions share of the impact and there was an extremely slight indentation in the rod bearing.

Cylinders 1-3 are fine, crank shaft is fine, rod bolts etc all fine.

Master tech said the car “probably” would have run just fine. I replaced all four rod bearings because fuckkkkk taking any chances.

Car runs like a top, no sound, and I’m back to break in for the next 500 miles lmao gives me time to work on my shit shifting

Perfect! Happy you hear you got out with a quick repair. That was the knocking sound in the interior cabin video you made.

SIKE, knocking still here. Normal according to master tech.

Said there is no play in the rods

Can we see the damaged bearing?
It’s was an extremely small indentation, the kind that can only really be seen in certain lighting as you rotate the bearing.

I have a video but it’s almost impossible to see and I’d have to figure out how to download said video from the dealer website

No, not that the techs could see. They said other than the one bearing, car was fine. Crank was a little cloudy but that’s to be expected after something like this

And yes, all out of pocket. Was about $1300
