Quick update on the SBX FL5 bumper project.
First, I want to make one thing clear I am not going to directly copy Spoon. I’m looking at what works in the market, what people actually like, and then using that as a reference point to build something that is still unique to SBX.
My goal is OEM+ minor aggressive, not overdone.
Right now, the direction I’m taking is to make the bumper a little less wide and less exaggerated through the outer contours so it flows better with the factory FL5 body lines. I still want it to look aggressive, just cleaner and more integrated.
I’m also planning to extend the splitter about 0.6–1.0 inch farther forward and add small functional winglets/endplates on the outer edges of the splitter to help manage airflow.
The large side air ducts are something I actually want to keep. On top of that, I’m looking at making optional air duct guides for those of us running oil coolers who do not want to start cutting up the bumper. The idea would be to help direct that airflow more efficiently toward the cooler. That part is still in the concept stage, but even without the guides, the large duct opening is already there and gives us a lot to work with.
I am also not molding canards into the bumper.
For people who want canards, I’m planning to offer them separately. I’m also going to see if we can mark or identify the proper mounting location on the bumper so if you decide to add them, it’s easier to drill or mount them before paint. That way the base bumper stays clean and OEM+, but the people who want a more aggressive track look still have that option.
Also looking into adding a fog lights option
This is all still concept/design stage right now.
working on the actual mockup now, and once I have something real to show, I’ll post it here
The support and interest in this project has honestly been overwhelming. I really think this is something the FL5 market is missing especially if I can bring it in at a fraction of what some of the high end Japanese bumper options cost.
No pricing yet. We are nowhere near that point, and I don’t want to throw out numbers that could change. But if I can keep this around half or ideally even a quarter of some of those premium bumper prices while still making something that looks right and functions well, that’s a win in my book.
