This is like the 100th thread about oil. Some people claim that the first oil is important for the break in. Some people change the oil immediately.

You can change your oil at 15% at the dealership.

Changed mine today at 4,930 miles. It looks like this. Going to send it off for analysis.

Just change the oil when the light comes on.

40% of oil life used up in 1700 miles? I say it was "run hard and put away wet".

I recommend an oil change and brake pad wear check. Then change oil again at 5k miles and every 5k after that.

My reference is the 5000 mile oil change on my car. My oil life was at 40% at 5k miles.
I live in a hot climate, with few short trips and get 29-31 mpg due to mostly highway use.

everyone will have a different opinion on this and I mean EVERYONE.

Personally I changed it at like 1800 miles and that included 2 track days, I think was like at 70% still oil life. If there was no track days involved I would have probably done 3 or 5k, I dunno if I woulda waited till the computer told me even though I don't think there is anything wrong about that and its likely fine

The computer does it based off time and mileage also. The reading is like distance and time based. I got mine in Feb this year. I have 2.6k miles it's at 30% I didn't drive it after I got it since it was below 40 in Ohio after I got it. I didn't get to drive it til like April or so when it was 50+ out. I personally just do it when you wanna. I usually do mine before I put the car away for winter time. On my 21' FK8 over winter i didn't drive it just fired it up a few times to make sure the cars good and i was like 70/80% when I actually started driving again lol

On direct injection...I ain't waitin'. I change my oil OFTEN. My engine has 3200 miles on it and I've changed the oil 3 times already. Keep in mind I track the car quite a bit. If I wasn't tracking I still would have changed it at least once already.

IIRC there are no special additives in the original Honda oil fill. It’s just got higher moly content because of the assembling lubricants. Honda hasn’t said anything about keeping ā€œbreak-inā€ oil for any period of time or mileage.
The oil filter and oil pickup mesh should stop any contamination from entering the engine either on the pressurized side.

that being said I changed my oil at 1100km to Mobil 1 0W20 extended performance. I plan do do oil changes once a year or 10,000 km. Mobil 1 EP is affordable and has a service life much longer than what I do between changes anyways.

Specially after seeing my oil at 4930 miles? šŸ˜‚ I told everyone I would hold out until 5K and I did. I'm sure she's fine but, I can't wait to see what blackstone has to say about the state of that oil. In all honesty though that's probably what my 19 si looked like every time would be my guess at 5k miles as well. If, they say it was still good I'll go another 5K and do it again.

Definitely would not recommend anyone going to 10k.

I read something awhile back that actually the original oil is indeed different than just regular oil. Someone sent a sample out for testing which lead to finding that the first oil is a little different. Yes, you’re correct that it will have moly in it from engine assembly…BUT it also has more additives in it. I can’t remember exactly what it is nor where I read it, but I BELIEVE it is something that helps reduce oil oxidation. It’s unknown how long the original oil will be in the engine from the time it is built to the time someone buys the car (and presumably puts it into operatIon), so having a more robust additive package in the oil, from the factory, would make sense. Other than that, I don’t think there’s anything special in it that helps ā€œconditionā€ the engine or seals or anything like that. In other words, it’s not ā€œbreak-inā€ oil per se, like they used to do.
