Making this car more raw?

I was going to get the hondata tune but I didn't catch their LA visit. Is it possible to do it myself? Also do I need a PC laptop?

You need to unlock the ECU - this needs to either be done at an event or you mail it in. I think most people wait for an event, and you can work with any tuner afterward, local or remote with e-tuning.

There are a couple tuning threads and 3 well respected tuners that are active on the boards (maybe more but I usually see those 3).

You'll need:
- Hondata Flash Pro (gets locked to your car until you remove the tune/sell it) ~$800
- Jailbreak your ECU (so it can be flashed, assuming you can't hit a jailbreak tour) ~300
- Laptop (I just have a desktop so I bought a new chromebook online for $150, worked fine)
- OTS (off the shelf) tune file from a tuner. ~$300

So it's about $1500 or so to do the full tune process. If you cant find a jailbreak tour then you'll also need to send in your ECU and plan for about 1-1.5 weeks of the car being down.

There is a good thread up now about the Phearable Stage 2 tune that goes into pretty good detail about what you get from a tune.

Ugh I wish hondata would just be able to have customers come to their headquarters to do it. They're in Socal (i'm also in socal). Would I be sending it to them to unlock the ECU or is there someone/somewhere else?

Kind of in the same predicament as your in now. The car does feel good but leaves me a bit dissatisfied when I drive it. I have done the prl mount and to be honest don’t notice any difference. Maybe I will try the has sport one.

Was going to do the prl intake just for the sound.

Yeah I'm going with the hasport race one. Is there such a thing as upgrading to a lightweight flywheel for this car? I see that the hondata tune can remove this "rev hang" problem, but this engine just feels slugglish.

from what I remember hearing in reviews is the car already has a lightweight flywheel from factory. Granted I’m sure after market may have an even lighter one. With this being a turbo motor I don’t see allot of benefit in one though.

I can’t speak for the tune maybe it really opens it up. My problem is I’m coming from a Taycan Turbo so there is now help on my end for this.

From the youtube videos on people's reaction after the tune, it looks like it improves throttle response and probably changes the torque curve a bit.

Our shop track car is a Cayman and shop development car is the FL5. Can you explain more about what you mean by "raw"? They are entirely different vehicles.

This car is my extra "fun" car that needs 4 seats in case my dailies ever break down. Usually my fun cars in the past have been 2 seat sports cars (gt3, gt4, gt3rs, r8, 570s, etc) but I've got 2 kids that always need to get driven around these days, hence the 4 seater need. My criteria was something with 4 seats/doors, manual, handle well, holds value, and cheap. So that's the background...

Now.. how do I make this car feel more raw? It drives way too mundane. The engine responsiveness feels sluggish. Any way to liven that up? In the manual porsche world, you can get a lightweight flywheel and that lets the engine rev freely and fast. Is there such a thing available for this engine? I plan to get a tune to at least give this car some more grunt. Other mod plans was to get the motor mount to get more feedback and supposed responsiveness. I also was thinking removing some of the sound deadening. I've already unplugged the stupid fake engine noises. I'm still on the fence for exhaust also. I haven't seen anything that looks good, lightweight, and doesn't sound like a flappy lawnmower revving.

Or am I chasing a dream here?

After owing 1k hp evo, procharged zo6 and a viper I thought fl5 was boring in stock form. You are going to have to build your car and that's the truth. The fun is had at 400+ and upgrading the suspension makes it all worth it. If you're use to having a certain level of performance a basic bolt on fl5 ain't going to do it for you. Once you build it that's where the magic happens.

Good summary. One note on the bold section - down time can be as little 3 days if Nextday Air is selected. You have plenty of options in TSP (via IMW or direct through IMW), Hondata, 1:1 Tuning, Phearable, and others.

This is ridiculous. You can't make the car into something it's not. Even breathing life into the concept it can remotely be in the same sentence as some of the cars you listed is just plain nuts, I'll be the voice of reason.

Clearly budget is no concern, so go get a CT5V Blackwing and put a loud exhaust and wild cam in it. Problem solved.

The only other car I considered when shopping was the 4BW

the 4BW might not be as fast in a straight line as the 5BW, but it is lighter, better handling than the 5BW

the 4BW is more fun-to-drive RWD, and even though heavier than FL5, the 4BW has better power to weight ratio.

the only reason I had to drop it from consideration was that it was too long to fit in my side of the garage. which left the FL5 as the only contender.

yet even if the 4BW did fit in my garage, the FL5 is more practical, more room inside and back, more reliable, cheaper, better resale value (though I doubt I'll ever sell my FL5) and better gas millage
