Hey guys! I was a member over on CivicX prior to my purchase of my new Champ White FL5. I certainly miss my 2019 FK8 and went through a lot of mental back and forth before I decided to pull the trigger and trade it in for the FK8. I'm an avid track junkie and tracked the heck out of my FK8, and plan to do the same with the FL5. I traded up for several reasons:

1. The FL5 platform appears to be able to fit wider tires than the FK8 without having to make modifications to the fenders.
2. The engine bay is roomier and appears to be easier to work within. (removing the rad support on the FK8 is annoying).
3. Log R. (not so much the app, but instead the gauges. I'm not a fan of drilling holes for aftermarket gauges).
4. Aerodynamic advantages.
5. Sportier ADAS.
6. (And probably the most important) The vented hood and larger radiator! (I was so tired of throwing money at the FK8's overheating issues on track).

At this very moment the car is completely stock with the exception to some window tint that I had applied to the vehicle, only 35% to keep it legal in my state.

I have two upcoming track weekends in October, and will be lightly prepping the car prior to those events!

Current Parts on Order:
1. HEL Oil Cooler Kit: (I saw the oil temps going nuts on the Suzuka and Nurburgring videos) The gentleman that I spoke with over at Dream Automotive said that their testing has seen a decrease by an average of 30 degrees Celsius, which would have temps maxing out under their test conditions around 230 degrees Fahrenheit, and I can live with that!

2. HEL Stainless Brake Lines. (Don't be dumb and spend $500.00 for the Spoon ones, I got these for $135 bucks!!!)

3. Motul RBF660 fluid (I was able to fade RBF600 in my FK8, so I changed to 660 and my problems disappeared).

4. Motul 300v Ester Core 0w20 (Ran this religiously in the FK8, and had great results)

5. I already have the AP/Essex Big Brake Kit that was fitted to my FK8. I'm going to install it on the FL5 (hope it fits, but I really don't have any reason to believe that it won't).

6. GiroDisc rear rotors

7. PRL catted downpipe

8. Paragon R7 pads for the front and R5's for the rear. (I've heard great things about the Paragon compounds from other drivers. I'm usually a Ferodo junkie, but I couldn't pass up the massive price difference. I'm going to try the Paragon and genuinely hope that I like them since they cost $400 less for a full set.)

I already have 2 full sets of Volks. Set number one is the CE28n club racer II black edition 18x9.5, and set two are the TE37SL black edition 18x9.5's. I run PS4S tires on the the CE28's for the street, and Nitto NT01's on the TE37's for the track. I have yet to install either wheel onto the car, and will likely wait until track time.

I guess my goal is to document the improvements I make to the car, but to also give track impressions as the build continues along the way! Hope you all enjoy!

Ha! Post them anyway. The world is a better place with more CW photos! I'm guessing no PPF? Which products did you use from start to finish?

No PPF, yet. Waiting for front bumper pre-cuts to be available. Held off on ceramic coat because of this. For now it was Sonax Perfect Finish Polish, then sealed with CarPro Cquartz, and two coats of wax. Once the pre-cuts are available for the front bumper I'll strip everything, apply the ppf, and ceramic coat.

Several track events are coming up in October. I'm currently waitlisted with Chin Track Days for their event at VIR. The following weekend is hosted by NASA, and I'd like to get signed on for that. I have however secured my registration for an event in SC at Carolina Motorsports Park! It's going to be tough to swing all three events financially, but I'm trying my best! Can't wait to get this car out on the track and see what it'll really do when it's pushed hard!

This was me in my FK8 at VIR back in July!

O.P. track guy - are you disappointed in the decreased diameter of wheels on FL5 ?
O.P. track guy - you mention YOU LIKED FL5 aerodynamics - you like FL5 smooth sedan look ?

I'd recommend reading this article https://www.roadandtrack.com/reviews/a41957966/2023-honda-civic-type-r-review-2/

The FL5, while more subdued in looks is actually more aerodynamic.

The facelifted FK8's did improve cooling capabilities, but unfortunately still suffer from overheating when pushed hard at a racetrack. I spent 1,000's on my FK8 trying to deal with the overheating issues, and despite a wide open grill, HKS oil cooler, C&R radiator filled with distilled water and water wetter I still was able to push the temp gauge up to 2/3rds-3/4's.

As for wheels, smaller is often better, to a point of course. I swap my wheels over for 18's when I'm at the track. The wheels I use are significantly lighter than factory, and having a higher sidewall on a wider/beefier tire provides much more protection on the curbing. I'd likely bend 20's at the track on my first lap.

Great to see more FL5's hitting the track. Definitely following this build for inspiration and learnings :)

Hopefully I don't wreck it!
You and me both! Wishing you maximum safety on your track outings.
Sounds like you've got some experience though, and you're prepping the car in the right way.
Cooling and brakes should definitely come before any power mods.

I've got an upcoming track event in 4 weeks, and my HEL oil cooler finally arrived! I installed it today, but to my dismay there are key differences between the FL5's we receive here in the states, and the ones that are built for countries overseas!. Despite this I was able to create a work-a-round and get it installed! I was in contact with Mike and Conner at HEL during the install, and shared my findings during the process so that they could develop a kit for us folks in the USA. This is the only external oil cooler currently available for the FL5. I purchased it from Dream Automotive. Nobody was aware until today that this kit wouldn't bolt right up to a USDM Type R. I consider myself lucky to be the guinea pig! Here's the install video below!

Super cool dude! Can’t wait to see what you do with the car and your reports on the oil cooler. Its high on my list of mods.

Here is a comparison between my old rotor rings from my FK8 with the new rings installed to the hats for the FL5. The old rotors had cracked through. Also have photos of a few more goodies ready to rock n' roll!.
