Rock chips on Type R rocker panels after skipping PPF

Hi all,

I had PPF installed on my car but skipped the lower rocker panels even though it was recommended. Regretting that now.

The right side picked up a noticeable cluster of chips, looks like it all happened in one event since it’s concentrated in the same area. From what I’ve seen, the rocker panels aren’t sold separately, so replacing means buying the whole piece, which feels excessive.


At this point I’m debating:

• Leave it as is and accept it
• Touch-up and then install PPF to prevent more damage
• Just PPF over it and move on

Left side is still basically perfect. What would you do in this situation? Anyone deal with this already?

Leave it as is and accept it

What's done is done.

It's a car, it doesn't need to be hermetically sealed.

You would literally have an aneurism if you saw what I did to my side skirt the other day.

The damage clearly bothers you or wouldn't have PPF on the car to begin with, nor would you post about it. I would go with Option #2. Touch it up best you can and get it PPF'd. You won't have to worry about it going forward.

Yep - I've learned that you'll enjoy the car more when it's less than perfect. Otherwise, you'll worry about it every time you take it out.

I would give it some time and then reflect if you really want to do anything about it at this point. The initial sting is hard and then the mind will reflect.

I assume you didn't have rock guards and flaps?

I skipped the side skirts PPF and the rocker panels as well, the OEM ppf at the back is too small and I know in a lot of cars people extend that I decided to not do it either.

I do have rock guards and minimal mud flaps from day 1, dont love the look of the mud flaps but they have saved the side of the car, at 9500 miles and not 1 rock chip back there and car has seen a bunch of auto x and track and a few long highway trips as well. I also live in upstate ny where all the roads are full of gravel and stones which is why I did the front ppf to begin with.

Not sure what I would do in your case. A touch up will always look like a touch up and when you put ppf over touch ups you can see it even more because the paint will not be flat. I probably do a touch up and leave it and get rock guards and flaps

I've been in this situation before and it heavily depends on what you want. I think like others have mentioned, if you really care enough to post it, I would touch it up to the best of your ability and put ppf on it.

In my case, I regretted not putting ppf on the doors of my type R, but I've kind of just accepted the minor dings. Waiting and not being reactionary got me used to it.

You can PPF parts of the car and you'll end up finding a chip in the one spot you skipped. This is a $45k dollar car, wasn't worth it to me to spend 15%+ of the price of the car on full PPF.

No PPF on my car, I don't mind any of the smaller dings and chips. Anything larger that you can see with the 10 foot rule I'll touch up using a Dr. ColorChip kit. I have the Honda touch up pen too, but I feel like this works a lot better.

I have to check that out. Had the Honda pen for the SI and it was a bitch to work with. I only have a couple chips after 10k miles, but I want to touch them up since they are on metal parts.

Yeah, the pen can be hit or miss to use sometimes. I really like the Dr. Colorchip kits and their paint matched to the specific Honda paint codes too.

What did you all PPF on your front of the car? whole hood? whole venders/ bumper?? I've seen some half hood and half fender jobs and trying to figure out what I might do this spring. ( I also have mud flaps and rock mesh in the fender openings. )

I did bumper, full hood, full fenders, A pillars, partial roof, mirrors. Also did the piano black in btw the windows. And then I did the top part of the bumper right in front of the trunk (I did this myself lol). Oh and off course head lights.
